Postpartum means the time after having a baby. After childbirth, it is important to care for yourself so you can care for your baby. In this chapter, you will learn about what to expect from your postpartum recovery—physically and emotionally. Important warning signs are also covered. Keep in mind this information is not meant to scare you, but to help you feel empowered. Knowing what to look for and when to get help can save your life.

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe the changes and discomforts to expect in the first 6 weeks of your postpartum journey
  • Explain how to simplify your life so you can focus on healing and bonding with your baby
  • List the warning signs to look for as you heal from birth

Note: separate classes for newborn care and breastfeeding are offered for more detailed information.
